"It's Time to Write a Book"

Tuesday, April 13, 2021 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Sponsored by the Central Florida Genealogical Society

Ever wonder what it takes to produce a long-form family history book? It starts by writing a single sentence or paragraph, your mission statement. Who is the book for? What is the scope of the book? Why are you creating the book? To honor your ancestors? To focus and organize? To downsize? If you haven't started yet, when do you intend to start writing?

Not all books fit on a shelf. The speaker created a 9' x 3' mural, a "book on a wall," for her father's 93rd birthday. And a half dozen scrapbooks, some to record travels to foreign countries, and one to honor her late brother. She'll also talk about Do-It-Yourself books and self-publishing.

TV Researcher and Genealogy Instructor Janeen Bjork completed a 182-page heirloom-quality book for a 94-year old client who asked, "Do you have any ideas for Christmas presents?" That was the beginning of a yearlong collaboration with a book designer, who helped her tell the stories of 11 family members who lived in the same house in the middle of Nebraska in the early 20th century.

Another client asked for help preserving the scrapbooks of her ancestors' 1912-1913 travel adventures. With that book completed, and sent to family members, another book, this one a family history book, is underway for the same client.

Janeen will share the lessons she learned about reviewing, organizing and editing family letters, diaries, documents and scrapbooks in such a way that your book will be treasured by family members, some who haven't been born yet.

"DNA Testing for Everyone," presented by Janeen Bjork.

Thursday, December 16, 2021 10:00 am to 12:00 noon

Lee County Genealogical Society Monthly Membership Meeting

Program Details:

The AncestryDNA, the 23andMe and MyHeritage marketing campaigns have been great successes and have led millions of people to order test kits. Maybe you've already taken a test and need help understanding your results. Or you have been thinking about it but wanted to know more before you made the commitment. You are encouraged to bring your questions and your relatives who are reluctant to test.

TV Researcher and Genealogy teacher Janeen Bjork will present an introduction to DNA testing for Genealogy that will be accessible to everyone. The discussion will cover the three types of DNA tests (autosomal, mitrochondrial and Y-DNA) and the companies that offer them. The costs of the tests, as well as the best ways to save money on testing, will be discussed. Real results will be shown to demonstrate what testing for DNA matches and ethnicity can (and can't) reveal. Attendees will see how different results from five different companies can be. Ms. Bjork has permission from about a dozen relatives to show their test results.
